Steven Skybell is nominated for his first TONY for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his "dignified and wrenching" performance as Herr Schultz in CABARET at the Kit Kat Club. Tune in on Sunday, June 16.
Steven Skybell won the 2017 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical for his performance in the Joel Grey-directed production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. His performances have been called "the best Tevye imaginable", "whimsy, depth, and humanity", and "a Tevye for the ages".
Reviews for Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish
"Steven Skybell brings exuberant charm, warmth, flinty intelligence and even a bearish sexiness."
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
"...a Broadway-quality Tevye...Mr. Skybell gives us an unusually strong sense of Tevye’s improvisational morality, which intensifies the drama of his rejection of Khave to an almost terrifying degree..."
Jesse Green, The New York Times
"Steven Skybell is a Tevye for the ages...the best Tevye imaginable..."
David Gordon, TheatreMania
Reviews for Fiddler on the Roof (Chicago Lyric Opera)
"As Tevye, Steven Skybell...wrestled sincerely with the changing world especially his daughters’ insistence on choosing their own husbands...in “Chavaleh (Little Bird),” his despair over his daughter Chava, who has married a Christian, felt bottomless."
Heidi Waleson, Wall Street Journal
"Steven Skybell brings him (Tevye) brilliantly to life with a perfect combination of whimsy, depth and humanity and the right kind of big, all-embracing voice to animate his songs."
Kyle MacMillan, Chicago Sun-Times
"The production is exquisitely sung; Skybell reads as a lighter, more youthful Tevye than is typical and his vocal choices democratize the whole."
Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
